ever since my own creation on the northern dutch countryside in 1977, one of the
mottos of my life seems to have been: i am, therefore i create.
in that little house i grew up in my mom would often ask me to leave room for walking
when my water paintings were laying out to dry, i wrote poems in a little book about
dancing mice and singing birds, made clothes for my barbie dolls and i invented
songs on the backyard swing.
these days a lot has changed, but some things remain the same. as i am typing this
there is sewing work laying next to me, there is a cake in the oven and i am uploading
pictures unto the net.
what happened in between? i went to school, flunked out of two different universities
(industrial design engineering and art therapy), held a wide variety of jobs and
lived in some different cities, all but one in the netherlands. i am currently living
in amsterdam and working for a film director as his personal assistant.
i do not have to spread my stuff out to dry anymore, i can just put stuff on the
internet instead. it takes up less living space and it's a better way to show other
people what i made, without running the risk of them stepping on anything.
i started this page in june 2006 because i had recently gotten into making video
and this seemed the perfect medium to share it with others. i was also looking for
people to collaborate with and this seemed the perfect medium for others to find
me as well. so this page was born and was intended to be for my video work only.
but people can not be changed and the medium in which something wants to be expressed
neither. so while i was trying to focus on short videos, i made other stuff, too.
i wrote stories, took photographs, made a documentary and did some other things
along the way.
the themes my in my work so far seem to become more and more clear: interaction vs. individuality, privacy vs. openness,
(personal) life in the public arena and the influence your actions have on others.
but there seems to be a constant shifting from focus on one kind of expression to the
other with me i think it depends on the mood, the opportunities and a lot of other factors.
recently i have come to terms with the fact that maybe i am not the
kind of person that can or should focus on one form and i think that it actually
helps in creating anything to use also the eyes and mind of a different medium to
look at things. so this page was revamped and turned into a general portfolio site, i hope you like it.
i am still very much interested in collaborations (i think it's always inspiring to work with someone who looks at things from his/her perspective instead of just my own) and i am, of course, also interested in any kind of feedback or questions you might have.
yours sincerly,
regina van der kloet
